What should you check before approving a glass packaging sample? Confirm the container identity, capacity and dimensions, complete closure assembly, appearance, decoration, application requirements and packing. Record results against an agreed specification. Approval of an undecorated or reference sample does not automatically approve every feature of the final pack.
1. Confirm the purpose of the sample
Ask whether the sample is for shape selection, closure fit, decoration review or final production approval. Record the product reference, drawing revision, date, glass color and every included component. Identify any features that differ from the intended production specification.
Photographs and reference renders can help communicate appearance. Use the physical sample, agreed drawing and written specification to define the product being approved. If a detail is not confirmed, record it as an open item rather than treating it as accepted.
2. Review the complete packaging assembly
| Area | Approval record |
|---|---|
| Identity and dimensions | Product reference, drawing revision, nominal fill capacity, agreed dimensions and any filling-line constraints. |
| Closure fit | Exact cap, lid, sprayer, pump or dropper reference; collar, liner or insert where applicable. Record assembly and use requirements. |
| Appearance | Glass color, finish and the agreed limits for visible variation or defects. Keep an identified reference sample. |
| Decoration | Artwork revision, print location, colors, orientation and finish. Note whether the sample actually includes the final decoration. |
| Application | Your product and filling process, the checks required for the intended use, results and unresolved issues. |
| Packing | Units per carton, dividers or trays, labels and pallet arrangements where applicable. Confirm which packing was represented by the sample. |
3. Match the checks to the intended use
Fragrance and skincare: review the bottle with the selected sprayer, pump or dropper. Agree dispensing, closure fit and compatibility checks for your formula. A matching appearance does not establish that two components work together.
Candles: identify the exact vessel and the intended candle system. Ask for relevant specifications and agree the testing needed for that combination before production approval. Appearance or wall thickness alone is not evidence of suitability.
Food and beverage: identify the food, closure, filling or preservation process and destination market. Request documentation relevant to the selected container and closure, and agree how the finished pack will be evaluated.
The required checks depend on the actual product, process and market. This checklist organizes the purchasing review; it does not replace application testing or the documentation needed for your product.
4. Record approval and open items
Use one approval record for the exact bottle or jar, closure and decoration combination. Include the sample identifier, specification revision, reviewer, review date, agreed results and any changes still required. Share the same record with everyone who approves artwork, purchases components or manages filling.
When a part or finish changes, identify what needs to be checked again. Keep the approved reference sample and specification available for production and inspection discussions. A sample request and production approval are separate steps.
Common sample questions
Can an undecorated sample be used to approve printed artwork?
It can help review the container shape, but it does not show the final printed result. Agree how artwork position, colors and finish will be reviewed, and keep those items open until the appropriate proof or sample is accepted.
Should I request the bottle and closure together?
Request the complete assembly you intend to buy wherever possible. Identify each component so fit and use can be reviewed against the same configuration.
Are samples free, and when will they arrive?
Confirm sample availability, any sample or decoration charges, shipping costs and dispatch timing for the selected project. These details are agreed before dispatch; no single arrangement applies to every request.
